Freeform is an American basic cable channel owned and operated by ABC Family Worldwide, a division of the Walt Disney Company's Disney Entertainment division. Freeform primarily broadcasts programming aimed at teenagers and young adults in the 14-34 age range, with a slight bias towards young women, a target demographic dubbed "becomers" by the channel. Its programming consists of off-network syndicated reruns and original series from today, feature films, and made-for-TV original movies.
Since its inception on April 29, 1977, the network has undergone numerous changes in programming format and naming under four different owners. The network began as a religious channel called the CBN Satellite Service, which was an extension of televangelist Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network. In 1981, it evolved into a family-oriented entertainment network. In 1990, it was spun off into a for-profit company called International Family Entertainment (IFE), which later became known as The Family Channel. The channel was contractually required to maintain airings of The 700 Club and an annual telethon on the last Sunday in January as a condition of the spin-off; these conditions have applied to all future owners of the channel.
A joint venture between News Corporation and Haim Saban purchased IFE and the Family Channel in 1997. A year later, it was rebranded as the Fox Family Channel. The new owners intended to reposition the network as a companion to the popular Fox Kids Network. After the network struggled as a result of their changes, the venture was sold to Disney in October 2001. On November 10, 2001, the channel's name was changed to ABC Family. The Disney-ABC Television Group announced on October 6, 2015, that the network would be rebranded as Freeform, which it did on January 12, 2016.
As of January 2016, Freeform was available in 92 million US households. The president of the network reports to the chairman of ABC Television Studios and ABC Entertainment.
